I recently had the pleasure of interviewing one of our latest designers onboard. This beautiful young lady is ought to take your breath away with her radical young ideas and her versatile personality. Allow me to introduce you all to Ms.Kez Ottman. This alluring young lady hails from Ireland and was on her way to become an architect when she decided to make the switch to fashion design and move to Australia. She realised that architecture wasn’t the career to fulfil her love for painting and creativity. In her younger days Kez used to watch her mother make blankets and was always drawn towards the skill. She was fascinated with the construction of the blankets and the beautiful finish that came with it. She was hence inspired by one of her own and decided to tread on a path that was carved from her mother’s love and passion towards her.
She is currently a student at RMIT, Melbourne and gets inspired from an array of things. Right from nature to poetry, she loves to communicate through her craft. Trust me when I say this, She isn’t one of your average cliché designers and tries to bring peculiar and unmatched things to life through her designs. Some of her greatest projects were inspired from neurobiology, fungi and imagery poesy. Unlike most other fashion designers, she doesn’t want to open her label in the future and wants to work for some quintessential brand someday as she believes that the market is already crowded with iconic designers who have left their legacies behind and hence if she is given a chance to experiment her own style and imagination while working with any such brands, she would be honoured. In particular, she wants to work with a French brand in the future as her grandmother’s roots are French and hence she believes that working for a brand that has a legacy and heritage from France would make her feel much closer and connected to her. She is strictly against fast fashion because she says that these brands end up wasting a lot of resources and materials and are also bringing in a lot of automation in the industry because of which people are losing jobs almost every day.
Her rebellious nature and an enthusiastic mindset is exactly what our generation needs. Stereotypes like body shaming according to her are a thing of the past. She surmises that size shouldn’t be a parameter when it comes to beauty. Infact, she really appreciates her university because she says that it makes them work on size 12 mannequins and that’s the way it should be. Students should be taught to be more inclusive and supportive. “Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes” she says. An outlook like that is what makes Kez a passionate designer who is all ready to take this world’s breath away.
